The Rockin Highliners
Sputnik Café
(Severn CD 0018)

I once had a friend named Sigourd Fjordensen and if that isn't interesting enough in and of itself, Sigourd had a three legged dog named Sputnik that hated me with a passion and would stop at nothing to take a huge chunk out of my leg. Luckily Sputnik never got a hold of me long enough to remove flesh, but anytime someone says Sputnik within a ten mile radius of me, it takes me back to a time when I really had to guard my leg from being bitten off by a vicious three legged dog that hated me for no good reason at all. Thank God The Rockin Highliners have made the word Sputnik good for me again with their latest and greatest release Sputnik Café . No offense to Sigourd, but I hope that dog is rotting in Hell. Okay maybe that's harsh. But the dog brought it on himself.

12 rock steady tracks of great blues goodness. They got a nice T-Birds thing going and I don't mean that in a bad way. Robert Tycholis does a great turn on lead vocals while Clayton Sample and Greg Demechuk excel on the guitars. Greg also plays a mean harp. Chris Byrne on bass and Ken McMahon on drums. A tight band. The band wrote all the songs and as far as I can tell, did no harm to any three legged, mean spirited dogs. Check out a great tune like "Fallin Down" or the really classy Kim Wilson sounding "What I Like Best". These guys are really good and the original songs are very well done. I could tell you more about their backgrounds or even where they come from but who cares? It's all about the tunes here folks and the tunes are rocking.

Do yourself a favor and try out the Rockin Highliners. Tell 'em Sigourd and his hellhound sent you.
